How Ventura County Animal Services Saves Pets And Supports People

The Fresh Patch Podcast visited Ventura County Animal Services to spotlight the incredible work being done for shelter animals in our local community. Joining us was Jules, Marketing Specialist at Ventura County Animal Services, who shared an inside look at the realities shelters are facing today, the challenges of overcrowding, and the many ways the community can help.

As a company focused on helping pet parents navigate everything from puppy potty training to apartment dog life, Fresh Patch is excited to partner with a local animal shelter working every day to improve the lives of animals in need.

Shelter Overcrowding and the Growing Need for Adoptions

Jules explained that Ventura County Animal Services is almost always operating at or near capacity. While successful adoption promotions helped temporarily open kennels late last year, the shelter continues to see a constant influx of animals.

In one recent week alone, 71 stray dogs arrived at the shelter.

With an average of around 15 new animals entering daily, the shelter staff is constantly balancing resources, kennel space, medical care, and adoption efforts to ensure every animal receives the care they need.

For anyone considering adopting a puppy or rescue dog, this is also an important reminder that preparation matters. Bringing home a new dog often comes with challenges like crate training, establishing routines, and potty training, especially for apartment dwellers or first-time dog owners. That’s where Fresh Patch products can help make the transition easier.

Fresh Patch and Puppy Potty Training

Fresh Patch is best known for its real grass dog pads designed for puppies, apartment dogs, and pet parents looking for a cleaner, more natural alternative to pee pads. Jules mentioned how products like Fresh Patch can be especially useful for apartment living and for helping puppies get familiar with real grass early on.

Many Fresh Patch customers discover the brand while:

  • Potty training a new puppy
  • Transitioning rescue dogs into a new home
  • Living in apartments or high-rise buildings
  • Helping dogs who cannot immediately go outdoors after vaccinations
  • Creating convenient indoor dog potty solutions

Using real grass can help puppies naturally associate grass with bathroom habits, making outdoor potty training easier in the long run.

Keeping Pets in Their Homes

Another major focus of the episode was Ventura County Animal Services’ commitment to helping families keep their pets whenever possible.

The shelter offers resources like:

  • A community pet pantry
  • Temporary pet food assistance
  • Support for containment issues like broken fences
  • Reclaim assistance for lost pets

Their mission goes beyond simply housing animals. It’s about supporting both pets and the people who love them.

As Jules explains, helping animals and helping people often go hand in hand.

Spotlighting Long-Stay Shelter Dogs

The episode also highlighted several long-stay shelter dogs who are still searching for forever homes.

One dog mentioned was Casadano, a resilient and affectionate dog who has spent nearly two years waiting for adoption. Despite the stress that shelter life can place on animals, Jules described him as loving, bright, and incredibly resilient.

Another unforgettable story was Riley, a dog who was finally adopted after spending more than 600 days at the shelter. His adopter reportedly drove eight hours after seeing him featured on social media, proof that sharing shelter dogs online truly can save lives.

The team also highlighted adoptable dogs like Hank, Spots, Jessica, and Franklin, each with their own personalities and stories waiting for the right family.

The Importance of Enrichment and Routine for Shelter Dogs

While shelters focus primarily on providing basic care, safety, and enrichment, transitioning into a home environment can still be a major adjustment for rescue dogs.

Consistent routines, positive reinforcement, exercise, and proper potty training tools can all help newly adopted dogs settle into their new homes more comfortably.

For many dog owners, Fresh Patch has become part of that routine especially for:

  • Apartment pet parents
  • Busy professionals
  • Puppy owners
  • Senior dogs
  • Small dog breeds
  • Indoor potty training setups

How You Can Help Shelter Animals

Ventura County Animal Services emphasized that there are many ways people can support shelter animals beyond adoption:

  • Foster a large dog
  • Volunteer with the shelter
  • Share adoptable pets on social media
  • Practice responsible pet ownership
  • Keep pets tagged and microchipped
  • Spay and neuter pets

The shelter also recently launched a “Long Stay Challenge” initiative to help bring more attention to dogs who have been waiting the longest for homes.

We’re grateful to Ventura County Animal Services for welcoming us onsite and for everything they continue to do for pets and families throughout the community.
