Saving Cats, Building Community: The Mission Meow Story

We sat down with Sally Williams, founder and president of Mission Meow, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting small, feline-focused rescue organizations across the country. From cat overpopulation and Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) programs to enrichment and indoor grass solutions for cats, this conversation connects rescue work, community support, and practical tools like Fresh Patch.

What Is Mission Meow and Why It Matters

Mission Meow is a nonprofit organization created to support small, grassroots cat rescue groups that often struggle to access large grants and consistent funding. These smaller organizations are frequently on the front lines of the cat overpopulation crisis, handling TNR efforts, fostering, medical care, and adoption, often with limited resources and small volunteer teams.

Sally shares that Mission Meow was built around a business-partner crowdfunding model. Instead of relying only on traditional fundraising events, the organization partners with businesses and donors to generate grant funding faster and more reliably. Since launching, Mission Meow has grown rapidly and has already awarded multiple large grants to feline rescue groups in need. A major focus is helping organizations that might otherwise close due to burnout or lack of visibility. In one story shared, a rescue group revealed they were considering shutting down simply because they felt no one noticed or cared about their work,  until receiving support and recognition through a Mission Meow grant. Community recognition, not just funding, often makes the difference between a rescue surviving or closing its doors.

Cat Overpopulation, TNR, and Rescue Reality

A key theme in the episode is the scale of cat overpopulation and how critical TNR programs are in managing it. Trap-Neuter-Return helps reduce feral and stray cat populations humanely, but it requires equipment, veterinary partnerships, volunteers, and funding, all of which can be difficult for small nonprofits to sustain.

Mission Meow specifically looks for ways to fund:

  • TNR equipment and medical care

  • Foster programs

  • Facility upgrades and expansions

  • Small rescue clinic builds

  • Community cat support programs

Indoor Cat Enrichment and Real Grass Benefits

We also explored how indoor enrichment plays an important role in feline health and behavior, including the use of Fresh Patch for cats. Sally, a retired cat behaviorist, shares how her own cats immediately responded to Fresh Patch grass placed indoors. Although it is commonly known for dog potty training and apartment dog relief areas, it is increasingly used in cat households for enrichment and sensory stimulation. Because it is real, pesticide-free, hydroponically grown grass, it provides a safe and natural surface for indoor pets.

Benefits discussed in the Fresh Patch Podcast include:

  • Sensory enrichment for indoor cats

  • A safe grass experience for immunocompromised pets

  • Encouraging natural sniffing, rolling, and lounging behaviors

  • Treat-hiding and foraging games

  • Catnip and toy play on natural grass surfaces

For cats who cannot safely go outside, including seniors or medically fragile pets,  indoor real grass can help replicate parts of the outdoor experience in a controlled environment. Fresh Patch is designed to be low-mess, movable, and safe for indoor pet use, making them a flexible enrichment tool for cat parents.

Special Needs Cats and Alternative Potty Options

Fresh Patch may also help support cats with mobility challenges who have difficulty using traditional litter boxes. Because it offers a softer, natural surface and a low-profile entry point, it can be a useful alternative for some indoor cats. Sally explains that while each cat is different, real grass can be worth trying as a lower-edge, softer-surface alternative in some cases. Because Fresh Patch trays are low profile and use natural grass rather than litter, they may help certain cats who are sensitive to texture or stability. She also suggests creative adjustments, like trimming or loosening sections of grass to better support covering behaviors for cats that rely on instinctual digging motions.

How Community Partnerships Create Bigger Impact

Sally emphasizes that Mission Meow is built on relationships, between donors, businesses, volunteers, rescue groups, and pet brands. Community partnerships allow nonprofits to grow faster, reach more people, and support more animals. That same partnership mindset appears in how Fresh Patch approaches collaborations and podcast guests. By highlighting rescue leaders, behavior experts, and nonprofit founders.

Listeners who want to support feline rescue efforts can contribute in multiple ways:

  • Small recurring donations

  • Business partnerships

  • Skill-based volunteering

  • Social media support

  • Local rescue involvement

Even small contributions can create measurable change when combined across a community.
